It's a....
Everyone seems quite excited about the idea of us having one of each. I would have been just as overjoyed with a girl for many reasons (mostly the clothes) but feeling very lucky either way right now. I'm sure there are many magical experiences that only boys can bring waiting for us. As far as I go, I'm feeling much better in second trimester and wanting to make the most of the last summer we are a threesome.
I also have quite a few home projects coming up I'm super excited to finish up. The bathroom mini makeover you already know about but I'm also working on two big makeovers - a living room and an outdoor entertaining patio - over at my brother's country cottage as well as adding a small bedroom (bunk beds!) to our beach place by cutting the shore living room in half. Maybe this is a blogger's version of nesting? Probably more like trying to squeeze it all in before the newborn sleepless zombie stupor sets in!

10 Productivity Tools You Should Be Using
Wondering how I stay on top of tasks? Here are my current top 10 favorite productivity tools…
1. Sleep Cycle App
This app will gently wake you up within a 30 minute window at the optimum time when your body is most ready to wake up. If you are feeling exhausted all the time and hate being jolted out of sleep by a noisy alarm clock, I recommend giving this one a try. It might revolutionize your sleep!
It also tracks your sleep cycle, so that you know how long it takes you to fall asleep and how restless you are throughout the night. I love this feature, because it has helped me track trends in my before-bed routine or behavior each night that are preventing me from getting the best night's sleep possible.
I don't know the science behind this app, but I will tell you that I've truly felt more well rested and energetic in the morning since I started using it. The Sleep Cycle App costs a couple dollars through the app store.
Note: I also have been using my new Jawbone Up3 to track my sleep and love it so much. It's a lot pricier, though, so I'd recommend the Sleep Cycle App as a great starting tool for tracking your sleep.

2. Google Calendar
I've sung the praises of Google Calendar many, many times. Google Calendar helps me organize anything and everything in my life by getting it out of my brain and into a secure, safe place that I can access from anywhere. I love that Google Calendar syncs across all of my devices and I can share it with family members and business team members.
Any time I think of an appointment, task, meeting, or deadline that I don't want to forget, I add it to my Google Calendar on the day I need to remember it by. Google Calendar sends me reminders, and I check my calendar each evening when writing my to-do list for the following day.
Their Drag & Drop feature has changed my life. If I don't get to a task or need to reschedule something, I simply drag and drop that task to another day. It keeps things organized and simple in one place. No more messy loose papers with scribbled words and scratch-outs on them.
I also love the Recurring Tasks feature, which makes it so easy to add in tasks that occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Just add it once and specify how often it should recur. Super easy!

3. Gmail
This is another one you've probably heard me mention several times if you follow me online! Gmail has so many great features that help me keep my inbox cleaned out.
Their Send and Archive button allows you to reply to an email, hit send, and it will automatically leave your inbox. You don't have to send and then go back to your inbox and delete it. All of it happens at once, which saves time in the long-run and allows you to follow the “touch it once” email rule.
I also love the ability to set up filters to have emails skip my inbox entirely if I don't want to ever see those types of emails. I can use their labeling system to find emails later, or even have a filter set up to have an incoming email labeled and skip my inbox.
In this way, it keeps my inbox clean, and I can find all of those emails in one place when I'm ready to deal with them.

4. Boomerang
This is an app that is added to Gmail that allows you to choose when you want to send emails, or when you want to receive and deal with an e-mail.
For example, if an email comes in that is not a priority at the moment, I hit the Boomerang button on my email and choose when to have it be emailed back to me. I choose a later date when I will have more time to handle it.
This helps me keep my email inbox clean but still prioritize the most time-sensitive emails first and not forget anything important.

5. Feedly
I use Feedly to read all of the blogs I follow. I don't follow too many, but I would forget to read them each day if I did not have Feedly set up. It's such an easy way to quickly go in, check my favorite blogs, and read through them efficiently.

6. Waze
If you regularly drive to places you need directions for, or if you live in a city with high traffic, I recommend the Waze app for navigation. Not only will this app tell you the fastest way to get somewhere, but it will also alert you to traffic, accidents along the way, construction, and anything else you need to know. It will then give you a bypass detour route that will get you there much faster and help you avoid those obstacles.
This app has saved me so much time and frustration since we moved to Nashville where rush hour traffic can mean it takes 3-4 times the usual amount of time to get to your destination.
7. TripIt
The TripIt app has been a life-saver to me with traveling. What I love about this app is that once you set it up, you can elect to have it connected with an email.
Any time I have a new hotel reservation, plane ticket, or any other travel information emailed to me, I can just forward it to TripIt. TripIt then automatically sets up an event for that trip and will add all pertinent information - flight times, hotel reservation number, a map of the hotel, etc. in an organized file in my TripIt app.
It is so convenient, and I don't even have to think about it! I usually just check the day before I travel to verify that everything is in my TripIt app for my upcoming trip.

8. Podcasts and Periscope
I love feeding my mind with good things, because I want to grow as a person. Podcasts and Periscope really help me in this area.
I turn on my phone when I'm getting ready in the morning, washing dishes, folding laundry, working on an easy project on the computer where I can multi-task, or riding in the car. It's so nice to have great podcasts or periscopes to listen to right at my fingertips, so that I can fill my mind with good things while my hands are busy.
9. The Delete Button
This might seem like an odd tool to have on this list, but it's really made a difference in my productivity so I had to include it!
I think if we would all do better at learning how to use the delete button very liberally in our lives, it would help us lead so much more productive lives. Delete the spam. Delete or archive the emails you no longer need in your inbox.
Don't clutter up your life and time with the unnecessary. Become best friends with the delete button and free up time to focus on what matters most.

10. Pen & Paper
I am such a pen & paper girl at heart. When it comes to my daily to do lists, I've found pen & paper to be much more effective than anything electronic.
There's something about the physical act of writing things down helps me to clarify, be more organized, and visualize in my mind what my day will look like.
If it's only online, I will forget or have to go look it up. Writing it down on paper helps cement my priorities into my mind as I face each day. It makes such a difference in my daily productivity.

Bathroom Update: Shopping for a Towel Warmer
My childhood home: A bathroom so small, that you can rest your head on the sink and wash your feet in the tub while you sit on the toilet (for the record, I've never done this but I know it's possible). It is the tiniest bathroom imaginable - my Mom is planning to renovate, but she has to be careful about what toilet she buys because some of the newer models are literally too long. In addition to the small size, my parents only installed an outlet in there after I moved out, so it was pretty brutal getting ready in the mornings when I lived at home. I was so routinely late for a morning philosophy class that the professor got in the habit of opening the door for me 10 minutes after class started, with such impeccable timing that I'd reach for the knob and the door would open, as if by magic (as an adult, I am now deeply embarrassed by this, but still fully committed to blaming that minuscule bathroom).
My first apartment: An absolutely HUGE bathroom because the toilet was between the sink and shower. To me, it was insane. Mind, blown. If we squeezed in, Hubby and I could actually stand in the bathroom at the same time.
My first house: Room for a VANITY. With drawers!! A whole gaggle of people could fit in there while it was being tiled. At one point one of the tilers dismissively referred to the bathroom as small and I scoffed, "uh, excuse you, this is NOT small; this is huge because there are four of chatting in here right now."
This lakehouse: Insanely large. We now have two sinks and a linen tower. And there's room for hampers IN the bathroom - two of them! In the bathroom!! I could totally host a cocktail party in here.
I have finally made it in this world: I have a large bathroom.
Now that we have a bathroom clearly fit for royalty, we decided to add a little more luxury. Heated floors don't really thrill us, but we decided that a towel warmer would be just dreamy on cold winter nights.
I started looking for the perfect towel warmer a little late in the game and was quickly overwhelmed - and disappointed! So many shops only had tiny photos in catalogs and, for some weird reason, towel warmers are a special order in this city (where it's cold all the time) and we were getting ready to drywall so I needed to find a towel warmer quickly. It was a frustrating shopping experience, so I expanded my search online and quickly found a shop with tons of inventory and a really great selection - appropriately named Only Towel Warmers. I reached out to them about partnering with me for our bathroom makeover and the owner was generous enough to send a towel warmer for review.
I chose a modestly priced model - the Amba Radiant Straight Hardwired Wall Mounted Towel Warmer - because that's what we would have purchased ourselves. It was $330 at the time, but now it's reduced to $264.95 - which is such a good deal! This is also one of their best selling towel warmers, and I can see why: it's stylish and contemporary, with a perfect size for a small space and a reasonable price tag to match!
Things to Consider When Shopping for a Towel Warmer:
There were some criteria we had in mind while shopping for a towel warmer, which I thought I would share for anyone else who might be earmarking towel warmers for a bathroom reno or update. These are the questions we asked ourselves:
Wall mounted or hard wired?
We don't have a lot of floor space in our bathroom, so wall mounted was definitely the better fit for us. Easy!
Style & finish?
Wow. There are so many different styles available - there is literally something for everyone, but we had our hearts set on a modern, streamlined towel warmer that would look like it was part of the same Kohler Purist line our faucets and sconces belong to. We also wanted brushed nickel (matchy-matchy!) and this model fit the bill! The brushed nickel finish matches the Kohler fixtures perfectly and with similar styling, you'd never guess that it's not part of the same line - which is exactly what I wanted.
Reading through the glowing reviews from Only Towel Warmers, it looks like the owner, Michael, has tracked down specific styles/finishes for customers - so I think that whatever you're in the market for, he can find. Seriously - some of them are designed so beautifully, you might not even know at first glance what it is, like the Amba Elory. You can even get fun colors! Or, if you can't find the right look, you can design your own towel warmer!
Hang towels on hooks or drape on a bar?
Some of the towel warmers we considered have handy hooks, while others only have bars, so we could have found a model to suit whatever our preference is for hanging towels. What I love about this model is that we can drape towels, robes, PJs, on the top of the vertical bars (makeshift hooks!) or drape them on the bars as designed. It's a versatile design, despite its small size.
How many towels will the towel warmer need to hold?
This was an easy answer for us, but for larger families or home with lots of guests, this is something to think about! There are really large models available - and some clever, super long ones for compact bathrooms with lots of occupants. We picked a style that had just enough room for two folded towels, side by side, and we mounted it high enough that we could still fit two generous clothes hampers below.
Size?
We didn't realize towel warmers came in so many different widths and heights! We paid particular attention to measurements, making sure not only that two towels could fit side by side, but that we were maximizing the wall space we devoted to the warmer.
Hardwired or plug-in?
Because we had walls open during the reno, hardwired was ideal for us, but I love that you can add a plug-in towel warmer to any bathroom without having to renovate! My Dad has a plug in one in his damp, basement bathroom to help his towel dry in less than ideal conditions.
Is a timer necessary?
Ours came with an optional timer that has a schedule - so handy if you bathe or shower at the same time every day! We don't, so Hubby is thinking of replacing it with one that will count down but I don't mind this model of timer at all. It's a handy to feature to add on.
Budget?
The price range for towel warmers really varies, but you can easily find one to fit almost every budget. For modest bathroom renovations, it's a nice treat if you couldn't afford more luxurious updates like heated floors or stone counters. It really does lend a spa-like quality to even the most humble bathroom!
Once we had these questions answered, it was easy to pick the best towel warmer - especially because Only Towel Warmers is set up so you can shop by brand, price, or sort by hardwired/plug-in. Here are some helpful towel warmer shopping FAQs for anyone who might be shopping for a towel warmer in the future.
Why I Love a Towel Warmer in the Bathroom
I am so thrilled we decided to add a towel warmer to our bathroom plans! It heats up quickly and it's such a treat to dry off with a warm towel - especially on chilly nights. I sometimes squeeze Hubby's towel over and drape my pajamas on the towel warmer too. The bathroom get pretty warm and steamy with the shower portal gone, but it's still nice to dry off with a toasty towel! Plus the towels dry much faster afterward, which is a plus!
It works so efficiently, I don't even really need to weave the towels in and out - they get toasty no matter how they're draped on the towel warmer, which is a relief because my enthusiasm for doing this waned after a week:
How to Install a Hardwired Towel Warmer
Installation for us was fairly straight forward. Because we had removed all the drywall it was easy to put wood cross pieces between the wall studs where the bar was going to be mounted. Hubby loved this extra security for install! If you don't do this step, don't worry, because you can just drill holes and use anchors in the drywall. Hubby also installed the electrical box and ran the wires straight down to the basement at this time (our basement is unfinished, making access easy). Once the drywall went up again, he simply installed the bar and connected the wires as per the included instructions. We worked together so I could hold the bar as he connected the wires on the bar to those in the wall. It was super simple to install.
I am so enamored with this luxurious little touch!
Shopping with Only Towel Warmers was so straightforward and easy. They have outstanding customer testimonials on their website and I can say from my experience, the customer service was top notch. The company is a family-owned business, located in the States, and I'm honored to be able to partner with and promote family businesses when I can.
Disclosure: I was provided my towel warmer for review, but was not prompted, encouraged or ask to include any particular information in my review. I'm completely happy with the product and the customer service, which seems to be the general consensus among customers. If you're shopping for a towel warmer, chat with the experts at Only Towel Warmers. You won't be disappointed, I promise!

Black and White Kid's Room In Progress
Turns out that black and white items aren't as easy to find. So I blame that (and you know the constant exhaustion that is pregnancy) for this room taking an age to finish.
We started with the Jenny Lind bed which I was fortunate enough to find used but in the wrong color. I was worried painting it might be a bad idea but I'm so glad I did. It looks so much better and more graphic in black!
The biggest dilemma were window treatments. I searched for months to find something that would work but nothing quite fit the bill. I finally admitted I was never going to find what I had wanted off a rack and turned to Tonic Living for something custom. As usual they were so helpful and created something beautiful. The drapes are blackout (key if I ever want to sleep past dawn!) lined and made of a lovely linen. Custom are definitely a splurge but so worth it! I don't know what took me so long to make that decision but here we are.
I also had the hardest time with bed linens but I sort of gave up the ghost on that one mixing a polkadot comforter and a grey + white ruffle quilt set to get close enough.
So this side of the room is done. I just have to work on the other side (ha! You thought this was finished? Nope!) before the impeding August deadline and I'll be golden.
I won't move Aggie in until the room is finished but she loves coming in here to play. Hopefully that will make the big girl room transition easier when the time comes.

What we can learn from one of the world's highest-paid consultants
Here's an interesting thing I learned when I used to consult for venture capital firms. If all goes according to plan…
Out of a ton of potential deals, a VC firm will invest in 10 companies.
5 of those will go bankrupt. They know this and expect it.
3 of them will “trade sideways,” meaning they'll basically putter along.
But 1 of them will be a huge hit. Like Google/Uber-worthy hits. That single deal pays for everything else.
What are the interesting things to take away from this example?
- After a while, you can build a model of what you expect and optimize for it. For example, I used to get random speeding tickets, but then I realized I could predict when I would get them, so I built them into my automation model.
- Being the best is way, way better than being #2. Like 1,000x better.
I want to talk about studying the best, because I've noticed too many people studying nutjobs and weirdos and thinking it's okay.
I see people buying courses from some random guy living in his mom's basement, selling an ebook on how to make a billion dollars, and I want to put my head in my hands.
I'd rather introduce you to amazing, successful entrepreneurs who can show you new ways to think. There's major value in learning from the best: They've seen tons of scenarios, they've surrounded themselves with better people, and they've gotten more “at-bat” opportunities than almost anyone else.
To do that, I went to one of the most successful consultants in the world. In fact, if you google “helping successful leaders,” you'll notice something strange. Virtually all of the 3,530 search results point to one person: Dr. Marshall Goldsmith.
Harvard Business Review and The Wall Street Journal note that Dr. Goldsmith is one of the top 10 leadership and business experts in the world. He's also the author of What Got You Here Won't Get You There (one of my favorite book titles of all time).
I recently sat down with him and asked him questions I'd been wanting to ask for years. Like, “What do you really teach the CEO of Wal-Mart when you do a consulting project? How does it even work when you walk in the room?”
Being the best is never an accident. If you're aiming to be amazing at what you do – whether it's your business, your job, or even your relationship – one of the best things you can do is elevate who you study from.
(For example, no more reading life coaches who are secretly struggling to pay their bills.)
Dr. Goldsmith is one of the few people who can answer these questions. Recently, I sat down to talk with him as part of my Brain Trust Program.
I want to share one of my favorite parts from our chat. In it, he talks about:
- What it really means when you attract and repel people – on purpose (1:16)
- A fatal mistake that smart people make - I am guilty of this (5:02)
- Why you should stop starting sentences with “no,” “but,” and “however” - a classic flaw of successful people (7:50). Again, I do this!
Check it out here:
Notice there's a reason top CEOs hire coaches and trainers.
Of course, they could read the same techniques in some book. But they know a great coach can take the material in a book and help them APPLY it. If even one idea helps them perform better, it's worth every cent.
The full session is available to members of my Brain Trust program. If you'd like to learn more about it, you can find more details here.
What we can learn from one of the world's highest-paid consultants is a post from: I Will Teach You To Be Rich.
